Mother’s day sure looks and feels a lot different this year than it has in the past and I am unable to put my finger on the why. Shawn is 12 1/2 years old and this is obviously not my 1st (or 2nd or 3rd) Mother’s Day and I am wondering if I am starting to feel the way my mom does – “It’s just another day Jules. I love you all and appreciate the love but at the end of the day, it’s just another day.” So says the woman who has 41 Mother’s Days under her belt.
And don’t get me wrong… I love the extra love, gifts, relaxation and the like too. Ha! I’m just saying that it doesn’t feel the same. I think it started to change last year when Shawn entered middle school and there wasn’t any presents he made in class. It’s always so sweet and endearing when they come home from school with a present and you get the whole “I’m hiding it and don’t peek!” the second they walk in the door.
Life’s changing so fast these days and I am just not ready for it….
Anyway, moving on. The entire weekend has been really nice and I definitely have felt the love from both my guys. Yesterday was the Taekwondo Mother’s Day class (see above picture) and Michael had to work. So all I got was a selfie in the car of us together. (They haven’t posted the pictures yet of us during class) We were the “seniors” in there this year – meaning, the highest belt rank, so we had to demonstrate the kicks and moves to the entire group of moms and kids.
At the end of the class, they all recite a poem and they give us a gift. Master Chong’s does a great job making sure that we all feel like one big family and it’s not just a place where our kid trains 3 days a week. They truly do go above and beyond and it’s why we have continued to enroll him in their program.
On actual Mother’s Day we went to a local nursery (one I have never been to and I will definitely be back!) to get all the plants I need to plant my butterfly garden in the far back of our property. I could have spent an entire year’s salary in there because they have such an amazing variety of plants. I think I kept telling Michael that we needed to buy a house with a bigger yard to fit in all the plants.
I will share what my butterfly garden will look like later on in the week. I can’t wait for the frost warnings to stop (another couple weeks) and for the rain to let up some and I can dig in the dirt again.
We also took a 30 minute drive out to Lake Ontario for a change of scenery but it was quite cold and windy, so we didn’t stay for very long. Merida loves the water and we were thankful that she didn’t try to jump in. That would have been bad for the drive home.
Hope all the moms out there have had a wonderful Mother’s Day too! Lots of love and hugs and appreciation for all that you do and will continue to do.
XOXO, Jules
Happy belated Mothers Day! We have a German Shepherd too, his name is Coffee (long story, grin). My mother and I were discussing this very thing; how the its just another day. Then it dawned on me next March I will be double nickels, and my son will be 25. Where did the years go? Wishing you a beautiful day, hopefully warmer weather will be coming here sooner than later, smiles
Shawn is a cutie! I’ve had 37 Mothers Days and I understand what you are saying..
I’m a nurse and was on call this weekend. Our night nurse ended up in the hospital so I ended up working all weekend. So it was a really strange Mothers Day.
We went to a greenhouse on Saturday and spent way too much money there – but it was fun!
