Yikes! How did it all of a sudden become 10:30pm and I’m just now opening my WordPress App on my phone to type out a post. Most times I have my posts ready to go a day or two early (depending on the topic) but that’s not been the case for the last couple weeks.
Before I jump into what’s been going on with me lately, let’s just all agree that I’m a bit “extra” sometimes. I mean… who else but me feels it necessary to color the cream cheese and make a unicorn bagel for breakfast? HA! It’s ok… you can tell me, I can take it. Lol
So two weeks ago Shawn had his first vaccine shot and had some yucky side effects for a couple days afterwards. I let him stay home from school on Monday because he just didn’t feel good. (Of course this was his first week back to full time in-person school). I called the school and told them and without fail they called me to discuss it.
Before I go any further let me say I UNDERSTAND and respect the safety of all students and staff at the schools. I really do…
I explained what was going on with him and they were ok with it all. By Monday night, Shawn’s allergies were acting up so bad that he was congested and sneezing like crazy. His normal allergy meds weren’t cutting it and I kept him home again. I couldn’t expect him to wear a mask all day long when he was sneezing constantly.
The school called me again… I explained it was his allergies (we had gone through this a month or so previously). They were ok with it. Wednesday is a stay at home day for them, so he was doing his work from home but he had developed a major cough.
All of this was/is totally normal for Shawn. We go through this every single year (I myself have allergies this bad too). Up until 6 years ago, he wouldn’t get over any cold or allergy attack because nothing could drain down his throat and it would end with a cough for weeks. We had his adenoids removed for this reason and it got 90% better but it still happens on occasion.
On Thursday, I felt terrible but I sent him into school with hopes that he could make it through the day without coughing too much. We aren’t allowed to send in cough drops or anything without a prescription, so he had water and some cough medicine. Other than the cough he was absolutely fine. No more congestion. No more sneezing. Just a nasty cough.
I got a call from the school nurse telling me that he needed to get a Covid test and couldn’t return unless it was negative. I explained that this was normal for him with his allergies and since he was showing no other symptoms, I didn’t think it was necessary. I was told too bad… so I left work, got the test done and no surprise there… it was negative. Yay!
It was Memorial Day Weekend, so he was off from school for 4 days and I didn’t need to worry about it too much. However, by Monday the cough was still terrible. He would cough until he would throw up. I decided that I would keep him home (again) on Tuesday and I would call the doctor. (and again, I got a call from the school)
I called them, explained that was going on and THREE phone calls later (mind you, I’m working and Shawn is with his grandma), I had to practically come out and refuse to have another Covid test done and demand that something else should be done. (His doctors office had never given me a hard time about anything!) By the end of the day, he had a breathing treatment and they were sending him for chest X-rays.
I come home from work… take care of all that and after a couple doses he FINALLY started to feel better. By the time Thursday rolled around, he was doing pretty good but not back to normal but he went to school anyway. (Of course all this happens when there is no more virtual school to fall back on!)
I sent him in with his prescription breathing treatment; thinking it would be fine. (I was busy at work on Wednesday and couldn’t verify with the school.) I got a call right away from the school nurse telling me that they need something from the doctors office stating that he could take this in school. So I called the doctors office and couldn’t get through to them. (This has never happened before!) I tried all day long and called every 20 minutes and was on hold for long stretches of time. I couldn’t even leave a message.
Later in the day I got a call from them about his chest x-rays (they were fine) and I explained about the nurse needing a waiver about the use of his inhaler. She was working from home and sent it to the office. No sooner do they receive my message, they gave me a call to tell me that this couldn’t be approved or denied until Monday because the person who could do it isn’t in the office until then. This was last Thursday.
I have been mentally and physically exhausted after the last 2 weeks… between stress, worry, anxiety, I haven’t been sleeping well. I have been eating terribly. I haven’t been working out. I feel like a hot mess.
I am however glad that Shawn is 100% fine and that it was exactly what I said it was… his allergies. But his mom was ready to fall apart at the seams and yet made it look effortless to him – though he did hear me comically explain this situation to his grandma.
Oh and BTW… he’s pretty much fine now and won’t need that waiver for using his inhaler at school come Monday. Figures…
XOXO, Jules
I am so sorry…I just think schools and folks are just taking all this way to seriously (ducking, I don’t want you to think I am anti anything). I am so sorry your son was so sick. I think the school yr. ends here soon, like the 17th. I know parents have had enough etc.
Oh my word! I’m telling you – common sense is not very common anymore. My 6 year old granddaughter has similar issues with allergies and coughs. And then she ends up vomiting because she coughs so much. My daughter has has similar issues with school. 🙂
Glad all is well in the end and hopefully this week goes smoothly!
