My Favorite… Live Action Disney Classics

With Shawn going back to in-person school today and I am back to full time working in the office, I will no longer have time on my lunch breaks to blog. To make things a bit easier while I adjust to working outside the home every day, this week may involve some quick posts and nothing too involved. (not today’s post but later on in the week. lol) I say that now but who knows what the rest of the week brings. I am taking it day by day at this point. I doubt it will take me long to adjust.

So that leads me to today post… and of course I am just not happy with just making a list. I need to tell something personal about it, so bare with me as I tell a story or two or ten.

My Favorite Live Action Disney Classic Movies

If you were to ask me what my favorite Disney movie was I would answer you with “do you mean live action or animated?” because they truly are two totally different types of movies. Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s and during the Disney Renaissance, we mostly watched the animated movies but when a live action movie was released on VHS it was a big deal because it was Disney in ways that we weren’t accustomed to seeing.

Mary Poppins: I know a lot of people generalize and say “I have watched this movie more times than I can count” but really, they probably only watched it a handful of times over the years. Mary Poppins is not one of those movies for me. I truly have no idea how many times I have watched this movie. I think back to growing up and my mom bought us the video tape, I had to of watched this at least 1-2 times a week for at least most of the 90s. I have since continued into adulthood and I watch this movie at least once a month.

Mary Poppins will forever and always be my absolute favorite Live Action film that Disney has ever and will ever create. Everything from the music, to the era, the costumes, the actors, etc. can never be matched in my opinion.

Michael embraced my love of this movie a long, long, long time ago and he’s always trying to find ways of bringing Mary into my life. He bought me this Precious Moments Marry Poppins years ago and she sits on my dresser. He also bought me a book that includes every Mary Poppins story in it. He also gave me this…

This is one of those pop-up cards from Love Pop and for our anniversary a few years ago, he gave it to me and wrote inside “Will You Be My Bert?” The card reminded him of the chalk picture scene in Mary Poppins (it does to me too!) and he knew he had to buy it for me. It’s seriously the best gift he’s given me in a long time.

When we were at Walt Disney World in 2019, I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Mary herself on Main Street in Magic Kingdom. I was hoping to get a chance to talk with her but no such luck! I am hoping that the next time we go I will have my chance.

(Oh and if anyone asks… YES! I do love Mary Poppins Returns. I was incredibly nervous for this movie but I think Disney nailed it! I already have all the songs memorized.)

Pete’s Dragon: I promise you that I am not nearly as obsessed with Pete’s Dragon as I am with Mary Poppins but honestly, I really could be! There is just something charming and sweet about this movie. I have the soundtracks to many Disney movies on my playlist and I find myself coming back to this one time and time again.

When we were at Walt Disney World in 2019, we camped at Fort Wilderness and there was Doc Terminus’s medical cart nearby and somehow I forgot to take a picture of it! I was so disappointed because it would have been a fun picture to have. I have been looking at beefing up my collection for this movie and unfortunately, there isn’t much and what I have found is super expensive. I will keep looking though!

Darby O’Gill and the Little People: Here is a Disney classic that not too many people have ever heard of before but it’s up there as a favorite of mine! I watch this movie only once a year (with my sister Jen – she loves it too!) on or near St. Patrick’s Day. A really young, adorably hot Sean Connery makes it really easy to love this movie. lol

Hocus Pocus: Now we’re starting to get into movies that came out when I was actually alive. Ha! Hocus Pocus is one of those movies to me that brings me back to my childhood. And yet watching it as an adult every Halloween, I am amazed at how much of it went right over our heads. (Thankfully!) For the month of October we have our 13 Nights of Halloween Movies and is always starts and ends with this movie.

Herbie: I have so many memories watching Herbie growing up at my Grandparents house and to this day any time I see a classic beetle, I instantly think of Herbie. This is a fairly new add to our collection and I have watched it a couple of times but it doesn’t make it any less of a favorite.

So do we share any favorites? Or do you enjoy one of the other many Disney Classic live action movies out there? I love the movies they’re making today but these definitely hold a nostalgic place in my heart.

XOXO, Jules
